R*n 288 - Great Manchester Tea Party

4th July 2026
Thanks to Dr. Fingers, we landed on the MRI Social club (who knew they had one eh?) which according to the taxi drivers taking several hashers there was a difficult spot to find. But, find it they did, and we all met up in a dedicated space for grub and drinks before heading out. Cwoardelia had prepared a sumptuous buffet including Sausage barms (cobs, rolls, batches, or whatever else you call round bread shaped bun things in your part of the world), Cheese barms (again, use whatever term you are happy with), crisps, hot nuts, and some very well received desserts.

Given the theme of the weekend, we were delighted to hear that an immigrant had prepared all the food (and hadn't been paid for it). the millionaires shortbread was in fact billionaires shortbread, and like the current leader of the free world, the nuts were hot and orange. A predictably late arrival from Beano saw him running to catch up with a pack that has left later than expected, but still too early for him. This amazing feat of tardiness was, somewhat predictably, repeated on the following day too - but I digress.

Our hares Beer Sniffer and Fishy Red did a magnificent job of taking us on a route around Manchester that included lots of green space - much more than we were expecting! We travelled out of town in the direction of Levenshulme, and dropped into the lovely Station Hop for a drink. As luck would have it they also had a splendid free spread so our thirsty hashers also had something to nibble on. We then departed and our route took us to the Friendship Inn on Wilmslow Road in Fallowfield. Not known for his flirting abilities with the opposite sex, Sir Prancelot however stunned us all by chatting up one of the female bartenders - earning him, Ladykiller and Cwoardelia a free drink. Well done Sir Prancelot! We also found out that Horny Devil and Beer Sniffer were engaged in this very hostelry!

After a spell in their most capacious beer garden, we took some photos, bade farewell to Barely In who had to get to the airport for a flight back to Prague (he made it by the way!), we then departed and made our way back to the MRI social for the circle, food and games.
On returning to the MRI social we had to answer for our crimes, which, as can be expected from an anniversary hash were many and varied.

Crimes included pointing (when will people learn?), missing the most obvious of arrows, arriving late, and many others including the most heinous of crimes, that of not being called out already. Our pack were hungry to take their punishment, especially the wonderful twister shots which were 1/2 Tequila and 1/2 Fireball. These were popular - and yes, some of the hashers went back to the bar later for more.

After the circle had ended we had a brief intermission whilst Cwoardelia readied the torture instruments outside in the beer garden...
The pack was split into two teams, and team captains Queen Myrtle and Smutley were chosen to lead the pack. The team players were matched head to head, and tasked with trying to drink a small amount of the drink of their choice, whilst strapped to the Beer Puppeteer devices that Cwoardelia had built for the occasion. It's safe to say that it was a good job that were were outside, as the majority of the drinks ended up on the floor.

There were however "winners" (if you can call being drenched in booze winning) as follows...

Queen Myrtles team: Beer Sniffer, Pearl Necklace
Smutleys team: Beano, Buggered in the Woods, Back Passage, Squeezy, Smutley

With round one over, we moved back indoors.

Queen Myrtle 0 : Smutley 1

After a much needed food and beer stop, the rest of the games proceeded. Cwoardelia had trawled his ancient memory for games from his youth in the dark ages, and we were treated to all of the following...

Eating a biscuit: In this deceptively simple sounding game, team members had to eat a biscuit. The problem being, that biscuit was placed on their foreheads, and they were only allowed to use facial movements to propel the biscuits towards their mouths. Fresh from defeat in the beer puppeteer round, Queen Myrtles crew were bent on revenge, and Beer Sniffer, Fishy Red, Pearl and Back Passage all managed to scoff their biscuits, whilst on the opposing team only Sir Prancelot and Horny devil were successful.

Queen Myrtle 1 : Smutley 1

Passing a balloon: In this old favourite, teams had to put a balloon between their knees and pass it to the next person. We did this as a relay, going to the end person who had to do a 360 turn before the balloon was passed down the line again. Queen Myrtle's team took an early lead on the first round, with Smutley's team drawing level in the second. The final round was a near photo finish,  but Queen Myrtle's team prevailed.

Queen Myrtle 2 : Smutley 1

Polo Passing: Another old one, this consisted of all team members holding a match in their mouths, and passing a polo between them. Much hilarity ensued, and Smutley's team managed to win this one. Particular mention must be made of Sir Prancelot as he's not clutched a woman this closely, probably ever.

Queen Myrtle 2 : Smutley 2

Anyone for tennis?: Here our hapless teams had to pass a tennis ball between the members of the team without hands, gripping the tennis balls under their chins. Any failures saw the ball go back to the start.

Queen Myrtle 3 : Smutley 2

You suck: In the final game, team members were handed felt balls and straws, and had to take it in turn to suck up a ball with their straw and carry it to the other end of the table where they had to deposit it on a plate. Another team member then took up the mantle and sucked up the ball again to get it back to the start. With the scores close and a tie-breaker necessary if Smutley's team edged ahead it was down to the wire, but the Myrtles won again, thereby claiming their title as the biggest suckers around.

Queen Myrtle 4 : Smutley 2

We bade farewell to several of the hashers and then went to the bar for a few more drinks and twisted shots. Thanks to everyone who came and made the anniversary a success. The lime green shirts are awesome!
